Get behind the Super 1s staff fundraiser

Since the start of October, 12 of our Super 1s staff have come together for the very programme that they help to lead in their communities across the country, and started their very own fundraiser to help the charity at a time where fundraising opportunities have been limited due to the current restrictions.

Everyone involved has been running, swimming, cyclinghand-cycling, walking or in Scotland Development Officer Barry McGeachy’s case, climbing to the top of Ben Nevis… the 1084.7 kilometres (just over 90km each) between the most southern (Plymouth in Devon) and northern (Tain in Scotland) Super 1s hubs, to raise money for the Lord’s Taverners.

Each Development Officer plays a vital role in their participants lives. They have quickly become mentors for those who attend sessions each week both on a personal level and a sporting one as they look to come together to play cricket while improving personal development. It’s been a tough summer for everyone involved in the programme, particularly during lockdown where sessions were suspended. This highlighted more than ever the importance of Super 1s for young people living with disabilities.

There are over 100 ‘hubs’ across England and Scotland - weekly sessions where participants can stay active, make friends, and develop key life skills like confidence, independence, and the ability to communicate. They also get the chance to meet inspiring role models, helping them realise what they can do, not what they can’t.

For many of us, taking part in sport, or just socialising with a group of friends, were all things we took for granted until earlier this year. However, for the young people on the Super 1s programme, those opportunities are far more limited, but for many of them, they really can be life changing.

Please support the team if you can, and take a look at the difference your donation will make.
