Marathon effort from fundraisers

More than 42,000 inspirational runners took on the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon, with 34 of them lining up in Greenwich to run it for the Lord's Taverners.

A huge congratulations to all the runners from Team Tavs on yet another fantastic London Marathon completed on Sunday!

The pace was set by Ben Bridges, who completed the marathon in an incredible time of 2 hours 55 minutes, finishing inside the top 1,000 runners in his category. The fastest female member of Team Tavs was Zoe Blackman, who ran the 26.2 miles in 4 hours 5 mins, placing 2,356th in her category.

Team Tavs member Paula Huelin Merino told us: “Today was just amazing, there are people cheering you everywhere, there’s not a single metre where there isn’t someone cheering your name.”

Daryl Baver-Pollard added: “You will hit the wall at some point, but the crowds really just drag you down the streets of London especially when you’ve got your name on your shirt, they really do get you across that finish line.

Dave Bill, also commented: “The Taverners’ involvement has been absolutely brilliant; it’s made a special occasion even more special. There’s been so much encouragement from everyone – all the cheering on really makes a difference.

An amazing effort on the day was matched by their fundraising efforts in the build-up to race day, with all the funds going to the Lord’s Taverners to help give disadvantaged and disabled young people across the UK the chance to enjoy and access sport and recreation.

Unfortunately, two members of Team Tavs, Will Langmead and Beth Mitchell, succumbed to injuries during the race and couldn’t complete the 26.2 mile course, but both helped raise significant funds for the charity.

After crossing the finish line, each runner is welcomed to a local gym with a champagne reception, sports massage, and hot shower, before an after-party held nearby for participants and their friends and family.
