
The Taverners XI at Arundel
The Lord’s Taverners return to play the Duke of Norfolk’s XI at Arundel Castle Cricket Ground on Friday 15 August 2025 to celebrate their now annual fixture and the first Tavs match played on the ground back in 1963.
Lord’s Taverners archivist William Powell looks at previous encounters of Lord’s Taverners teams at the picturesque Arundel Ground in West Sussex home of the Duke of Norfolk’s XI - having been used by Lavinia Duchess of Norfolk’s XI and the Earl of Arundel’s XI previously.

The Lord’s Taverners have played a variety of different titled teams in the last 75 years at Castle Park, Arundel which have included the following 17 matches against varied opponents.
Match 1 on 25 August 1985 between Lavinia Duchess of Norfolk’s XI and Lord’s Taverners match washed out.
Match 2 on 24 August 1986 between Lavinia Duchess of Norfolk’s XI and Lord’s Taverners match cancelled.
Match 3 on 30 August 1987 between Lavinia Duchess of Norfolk’s XI and Lord’s Taverners match cancelled.
Match 4 on 28 August 1988 was staged as a 12-a-side match between Lavinia Duchess of Norfolk’s XI and the Lord’s Taverners who fielded 13 but only 12 batted. Lavinia Duchess of Norfolk’s XI team was captained by Mike Denness (Scotland, Kent, Essex, and England) and included A. Parsons, D. Hylton, P. Robinson, A. Cleaver, A. Wix, J. Clare, R. Groom, I. Wilks, N. Gayner, L. Hirst and D. Smith. The Lord’s Taverners side included Graham Johnson (Kent), David Frost, Alan Mills, Willie Rushton, Kieran Prendiville, John Snow (Sussex and England), Sir Richard Stilgoe, Sir Tim Rice, Greg Campbell, Barry Norman, John Price (Middlesex and England), Derek Underwood (Kent and England) and Butch White (Hampshire). Lavinia Duchess of Norfolk’s XI totaled 213 for 8 declared from 36 overs. Mike Denness top scored 62 and was ably supported by Hylton 51, Wix 30, and Robinson 26. The pick of the bowlers for the Lord’s Taverners was Derek Underwood with 4 for 42. Needing 214 to win the Lord’s Taverners reached 187 for 9 from 41.5 overs when time was called. Graham Johnson scored 51, John Snow 37, and Greg Campbell 20. The pick of the bowlers for Lavinia Duchess of Norfolk’s XI was A. Cleaver with 5 for 20. Result Match Drawn.

Match 5 on 11 September 1988 between Lavinia Duchess of Norfolk’s XI and Lord’s Taverners match abandoned.
Match 6 on 27 August 1989 staged as 12-a-side match between Lavinia, Duchess of Norfolk’s 13 against Lord’s Taverners 15 of which only 12 batted for either side. Lavinia, Duchess of Norfolk’s XI was captained by Mike Denness (Scotland, Kent, Essex and England) again and included the following players D. Hylton, I. Wilks, A. Parsons, A. Cleaver, A. Wix, V. Grant, S. Ratnayake, D. Hirst, P. Groom, J. Smith, L. Gayner and D. Clare. The Lord’s Taverners side was captained by John Price and included Bill Frindall, Jack Taylor, Kieran Prendiville, B. Wiggins, Clive Radley (Middlesex and England), Leslie Thomas, Christopher Blake, Sir Richard Stilgoe, Frazer Hines, Nicholas Parsons, Graham Johnson (Kent), Derek Ufton (Kent), and Butch White (Hampshire). Lavinia, Duchess of Norfolk’s XI totaled 191 for 6 declared in 38 overs. I. Wilks 64, D. Hylton 39 and Mike Denness 35, top scored. The pick of the bowlers for the Lord’s Taverners was Graham Johnson 2 for 13 and Kieran Prendiville 2 for 2. Wiggins, Jonathan Rice, and John Snow (Sussex and England). Lord’s Taverners won the toss and elected to the field. Lavinia, Duchess of Norfolk’s XI scored 208 for 9 declared in 38 overs. The top scorers were R. Wills 52, M.H. Denness 51 and I. Wilkes 20 not out. The pick of the bowlers for the Lord’s Taverners was Sir Tim Rice who bagged 3 for 37. Set 209 to win the Lord’s Taverners replied with 209 for 10 from 38 winning by 1 wicket. The top scorers were Rory Bremner 53, Graham Johnson 51, Graham Roope 34, and Sir Tim Rice 23 not out. The pick of the bowlers for Lavinia, Duchess of Norfolk’s XI were R. Groom 3 for 27 and L. Hirst 2 for 12.
Match 8 on 30 August 1992 between Lavinia, Duchess of Norfolk’s 12 against the Lord’s Taverners XI. The Lord’s Taverners won the toss and decided to field. Lavinia, Duchess of Norfolk’s XI team included Paul Downton (Kent, Middlesex, and England) as captains A. Symondson, Norman Cowans (Middlesex, Hampshire, and England), Barratt, P. Coggan, R. McGhie, D. Wighton, D. Jones, M. Costello, A. McCrone, N. Dudley, and R. Dollimore. The Lord’s Taverners side was captained by John Price (Middlesex and England) and included Roy Virgin (Somerset and Northamptonshire), John Barclay (Sussex) now President of Friends of Arundel Castle CC, David Frost, N. Pace, John Snow (Sussex and England), Chris Tarrant, Rory Bremner, Don Wilson (Yorkshire and England), Kieran Prendiville and Graham Johnson (Kent). Lavinia, Duchess of Norfolk’s XI totaled 187 for 8 declared in 31 overs with top scorers Paul Downton 111, A. Symondson 24, and P. Coggan 20. The pick of the bowlers for the Lord’s Taverners were Don Wilson 3 for 34 and Kieran Prendiville 3 for 9. Tim Lamb (Oxford University, Middlesex and Northamptonshire), Bob ‘The Cat’ Bevan, Graham Johnson (Kent), Julian Wilson, John Price (Middlesex and England) and John Snow (Sussex and England). Lord’s Taverners won the toss and elected to the field. Lavinia, Duchess of Norfolk’s XI totaled 173 for 7 declared from 40 overs. Phil Edmonds 37 and John Barclay 37 not out top scored. The pick of the bowlers for the Taverners were Julian Wilson 2 for 35 and Bob Bevan 2 for 29. Match (14) Lord’s Taverners v The Cricket Society XI on 27 August 1995. The match was 13-a-side with 11 to bat and field. The Cricket Society XI batted first, having been put in and achieved 195 for 5 declared from 38 overs Ron Paterson top scored with 89 not out and was supported by Paul Box-Grainger with 56 and John Douglas with 23 not out. The best bowler for the Lord’s Taverners was John Shepherd with 1 for 14. The Cricket Society side included Reg Scarlett (Jamaica and West Indies). The Lord’s Taverners need 196 to win and ended on 195 for 9 from 38 overs so the match was drawn.
