Inter Prep School Relay Marathon
In a first, not just for the Taverners, but for the UK, the inaugural Inter Prep School Relay Marathon took place at Wellington College on 13 October. 12 runners from each school at either U11 or U13 level each ran 2.2 miles to complete the marathon distance around the college grounds. Every boy or girl was sponsored to the tune of at least £50
Five days out the forecast was for dry, warm conditions, but instead we had a more or less continuous downpour. (Thank you Mr Fish!) Nevertheless 13 teams turned up, including a couple of prep school staff teams. And several schools which dropped out at the last minute sent contributions to the fund.
At 10.30am sharp, Chris Tarrant, our indefatigable commentator, sent the first runners off to the sound of the college field gun, with Motown hits blaring in the background. The volunteer Marshalls, meanwhile, had been stationed around the course, already looking like drowned rats. As the race developed it became clear that the U13 race was going to be closely contested, but in the end Caldicott School emerged as the winners in the thoroughly impressive time of 3 hours 5 minutes. That’s an average of 7 minute miles! Perhaps even more amazing were the U11 team from Cothill, who came home in 3 hours 30 minutes, only 2 minutes per leg slower.
Despite the weather everyone agreed that the day had been a great success. It would never have happened, however, without the fantastic organisational skills of both Wellington, and especially the event team from head office, led by Jo Davis. We are expecting to raise over £12,000 once the sponsorship money and further donations from parents come in.
Well done everybody. Roll on next year when we hope for at least double the number of teams
