Rockhampton cruise to Davidstow Village Cup quarter-final victory
The Davidstow Village Cup quarter finals took place last Sunday (28 July) and down in the West Country Rockhampton CC hosted Berkshire champions Wraysbury. The visitors won the toss and chose to bat but Rockhampton opening bowlers Will Cartlidge & Chris Pearce set the tone with their opening spell to slump Wraysbury to 26 for 3 from 10 overs.
A middle order fightback saw the traveller’s score boosted to 75 for 5 at drinks. But it was the introduction of Sam Nichols which saw the dismissal of the dangerous Yasin for 22 and Jack Spence who removed the next 3 wickets. Wraysbury continued to try and force the issue but Nichols took the remaining 2 wickets to leave him with impressive figures of 4 for 35 from 8 overs, to leave Rockhampton chasing 147 to win.
With the threat of heavy rain, the score raced along to 81 before the loss of the first wicket. This did not halter the chase as Matt Tyler patiently made his way to 60 not out which took the result beyond any doubt. Brothwood joined the party late on and bludgeoned a couple of huge sixes to take Rockhampton to their total with over 10 overs remaining.
As The Lord's Taverners was the official charity of the Davidstow Village Cup the club was able to do some fundraising on the day. Regional chairman Andy Stovold kindly patrolled the club with a bucket collection which raised £142.07 for The Lord’s Taverners.
Thank you to all those who donated and good luck to Rockhampton who face Buckinghamshire champions Dinton in the semi-finals on Sunday 11 August.
