Past Event

Following an exciting and narrow victory in the first Ashes Test at Tent Bridge, there was great expectation prior to the celebrated Lord’s Test Match. Over 400 people gathered at the Kensington Garden Hotel to partake in an evening of stimulating entertainment.

The theme of the event was to choose some of the best moments in Ashes history.  A number of these had been chosen by an esteemed group led by Chris Cowdrey and were then shown on screen at the dinner.  These were then discussed by English and Australian panels and hosted by Nick Hancock. England was represented by Bob Willis, Mike Gatting and Allan Lamb.  The Aussies were represented by Neil Harvey, Jack Clark and living legend Richie Benaud.

There have been many great moments in Ashes history and it was a privilege to hear from some of those who actually played a part – Bob Willis and his bowling exploits or Mike Gatting facing the ball of the century.  The chosen winner was the Botham and Willis display at Headingley in 1981.

The evening had sold out with a particularly large contingent from Investec who had supported the Taverners by sending over 50 of their staff on the Investec Ashes Cycle Ride. Mike Gatting actually auctioned his bike on the night.  Over £35,000 was raised at the event – a memorable and entertaining evening.
