Third Annual Lunch in Brighton and Hove
Whilst the weather for the day was dull, the mood at the Lady Taverners’ third annual lunch in Brighton and Hove was decidedly jovial. The event, which took place at Hotel du Vin on 24 April, was run in conjunction with local accountants, Humphrey and Co, who were delighted to be its co-hosts for the second year in a row.
On arrival guests were greeted with a sparkling champagne reception and had an opportunity to mingle as well as meeting special guests, ‘Dancing on Ice’ star Jayne Torvill, and The Bill actor Chris Ellison. Local businesses LK Bennett, Madajazz & Silpada were also supporting the event, and each had stands displaying their wares.
Once guests had been seated host Sue Pocklington, partner at Humphrey and Co welcomed guests to the event before introducing President of East Sussex and Kent Lady Taverners’, Laura Collins.
Laura thanked the guests for coming and gave an overview of the great work that the Lord’s and Lady Taverners do. She explained that the aim of the charity is always to ‘raise money whilst having fun’, before challenging tables to take part in a ‘Smarties’ game, exchanging the contents of a tube of Smarties for pound coins, raising £27 per tube! *
Laura handed over to Jayne Lynch of bag company Madajazz, guest speaker for the charity lunch, who gave an insight into the design and production of her beautiful Madagascan sourced raffia bags.
Next was a sealed bid auction for a beautiful cricket bat donated by Sussex Cricket Club and signed by all of the current team. It went to the highest bidder, for a staggering £200, with the delighted winner purchasing it as a surprise for her husband!
As the afternoon drew to a close it was time for the event’s celebrity guests, Jayne and Chris, to draw the raffle winners. This took some time as local companies, including Brighton & Hove Albion, Hotel du Vin, Grovewood Wealth Management and Real Patisserie, had generously donated a huge number of prizes. As a result there were many happy winners!
On totalling up the proceeds of the event The Lady Taverners were pleased to note that £1311.91 had been raised, every penny of which will go towards giving young people everywhere a sporting chance in life.
