Cape Town Opera
Kerry Underwood, a stalwart Taverner, deserves enormous credit for persuading the singers from Cape Town Opera, drawn from the finest voices in the adjacent townships, to give a performance at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, in early June.
The CTO were touring the UK with performances of “Porgy and Bess” and delighted the audience with a concert of South African folk songs, spirituals and operatic arias, including, for the first time in England, extracts from a brand new opera, “Mandela”. The evening was preceded by a VIP champagne reception and a very successful auction. The money raised was divided equally between the Taverners and CTO.
