Unbeaten Hillingdon win back-to-back Super 1s titles

Hillingdon retained their title in style at the Lord’s Taverners Super 1s London Finals at Lord’s this week (17 October), going unbeaten all day at the home of cricket. Featuring the best bowling attack in the competition, they won all five of their matches to finish top of the final standings.

Over 80 disabled young people in six teams from London and the surrounding counties came to Lord’s for a day of fun and competitive cricket. The teams competing were from Bexley, Hackney, Hillingdon, Kingston, Newham and Redbridge.

There was an extra surprise on the day as Australian cricketing legend Shane Warne was on hand to present the winning trophy to Hillingdon, as well as certificates to Adam Hollingsworth and Leanne Tansley for winning the Spirit of Cricket and Player of the Day awards respectively.

Warne commented: “I was very honoured to present the trophies to these inspirational and very impressive cricketers today. You guys absolutely rocked the home of cricket, and it was awesome to meet you all - keep up the great work.”

The team from Hackney finished as runners up for the second successive year, falling agonisingly short, losing only to the winners. Kingston finished in third place despite hitting the highest team total of the day twice, scoring 233 against Redbridge and Newham. Bexley finished 4th and nearly caused an upset when they played Hillingdon, losing a nail-biter by 1 run. Newcomers Redbridge and the team from Newham battled it out for the last two places in the penultimate game of the day, with Redbridge coming out on top to cement 5th place.

Adam, a participant from Hackney Super 1s who won the Spirit of Cricket award, said “Inside, it makes me feel very happy but very determined to win. It’s something you can look forward to and something you can actually hang on to.”

Aiden, who attends the Newham Super 1s hub added, “When I go to my club, there’s other disabled young people there so I can talk to them and speak how they’re doing, stuff like that and play sports with them.”
